After flooding, private well owners should take actions to ensure their private water supply is safe for consumption. When a water supply well has been affected by flood waters, the water within the well may be contaminated with waterborne pathogens (germs) that can cause serious illness in humans and pets.

As part of National Groundwater Awareness Week, the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) is reminding Connecticut residents with private wells to consider testing their wells to ensure safe water quality. Water plays an essential role in everyone’s life. Approximately 23% of Connecticut residents: roughly 820,000 people rely on a private well as the source of their household water.

The Pomperaug District Department of Health has been notified of elevated levels of uranium in a private well in the southern Southbury area.The Health District is offering water testing for uranium (and arsenic), free of charge, to those who live in the area and have private well water systems.
